Communication and Relationship with Your Parenting Partner
There are special problems with communication in times of divorce and separation. Please watch the next video.
Look in the Additional Resources section for ideas for communicating with a difficult co-parent.
It can be hard to talk with your children after divorce and separation, too. In the Additional Resources section are some suggestions for making your communication with your children better.
Some children want to talk with you when you are at the dinner table. Others may want to talk when you are in the car. Some might want to send text messages or e-mail. Be flexible. Remind your children that some messages should be private, though. Sometimes they forget that Facebook and other social media reach lots of people. Help them learn to protect themselves and respect the privacy of others.
Communicating at a Distance
Some divorced or separated parents live far away from their children. It can be hard to communicate when far away. Staying in touch by telephone or computer can help. Little children will want to see the parent. So the computer or smart phones can be helpful for them.
Look in Extra Reading for more suggestions of Ways for Parents to Connect with their Children from a Distance.
Communicating with the Extended Family
It is also important for children to stay connected to grandparents and other relatives. Grandparents are not always included by the courts at times of divorce and separation. But children usually want to stay close to their grandparents. The telephone and computer can be helpful for them, too. Look in the Additional Resources section for a way to stay close using letters. It is called Grandletters . Yes, some people do still write letters! And this could be done with electronic communication, too.
