Some experts have listed stages that parents go through during divorce and separation. Professor Steven Duck made an outline of what happens when relationships break down. He called it 5 “phases” of breakdown.

Other experts have listed different stages of divorce. They have used the same stages that people experience when a loved one dies. But, as we said, divorce and separation are different from death. Robert Emery has created a different theory of adjustment for divorce.
