The divorce and co-parenting class taught several key nuances of effective communication that help equip parents for success. These included: 1. Parents learned to express their own feelings and needs without blaming the other, which reduces defensiveness and conflict. 2. Active Listening and Validation - The class emphasized listening to understand, not just to reply. Validating the other parent’s perspective, even when you disagree, builds mutual respect. 3. Staying Child-Focused - Communication was framed around what’s best for the child, helping parents shift from emotional reactions to practical decision-making. 4. Managing Emotions Before Speaking - Techniques were taught to pause, breathe and cool down before responding - especially in heated moments - to prevent escalation. 5. Setting Boundaries and Staying Neutral - Parents learned to keep communication brief, respectful, and focused on parenting topics, avoiding personal attacks or past relationship issues. 6. Using Written Communication When Needed - The course introduced tools like co-parenting apps or structured emails to reduce miscommunication and create a healthy distance when necessary. These skills equip parents to work together more effectively, reduce conflict, and create a stable environment for their children during and after the transition. I'm impressed overall with the foresight and depth of the program.
